Teen Bloggers

by Kay~Kacey on 3/10/2005

So, would you let your young teen have a blog? Would you worry about what they said or that they might not realize the implication of how many people may be reading their thoughts? Or that they might name their English teacher and say they hate her . Or even that their father said their science teacher is a stupid twit

Looks like tons of blogs are by teens. USA Today said that a study “estimates there will be more than 10 million blogs by the end of this year (2004), with more than half of them about 52% created by youths ages 10 to 19. Another 40% are created by 20-somethings. ” Hm, let’s just say I’m in the small minority on this blogging thing…

It boggles my mind how kids communicate these days. Text messages. Instant messages. Blogs. Cell phones. (okay, as an aside, the cell phone thing…it sure is nice not to have to answer the house phone and yell over the stereos “hey, Junior, the phone’s for you) Oh…as another aside…I now have to yell “house phone” when someone actually calls the house… 😉

A friend’s son’s girlfriend (did you follow that?) is studying abroad next year. Can you imagine? Still being able to “chat” in instant message? Hecky, I would imagine they could set up video cameras to their college fast internet connections and actually SEE each other. Email pictures back and forth. Who would have thought??

And long distance phone bills, remember those?? Now it seems everyone has free nights and weekends. Or free sprint to sprint or insert your variety of cell phone service. Most of my kidincollege friend’s don’t even have landline phones in their dorms or apartments.

It’s a different technological world than the one I grew up in. Not bad though. I admit to being a closet geek. Or not so closet. :typing: Though I am a little afraid I’m now sounding like my mother with all the “when I was a girl” comments…

Is there a scared smilie?? I started to become very afraid when, last summer, I logged onto my nine year old’s email address to check up on her and found that she had created an entire website all on her own. With pictures and links and pages and all kinds of scary things. She had no help, didn’t even ask. Not that I had a clue how to do that stuff.
By the time she is a teenager – look out. Who knows what techie stuff she will be capable of doing. 😯

We live in the Dark Ages at our house. My dad’s cell phone is one of those where you buy X number of minutes. We still have land lines (the parents’ and mine). And we still have long distance bills. 🙄

😳 I didn’t mean to send that twice. It looked like it didn’t go through the first time.

You’re definitely scaring me. Cyberspace is NOT safe for young kids. We have to teach them to be very careful.
