genres and sub-genres

I always find it fascinating to find out what kind of books people write. Sometimes the quietest writers write the spiciest books! People who seem like they’d love to write chick lit and have funny quirky voices in real life…write historicals.

I’ve tried a lot of genres before settling on my relationshipy romance. I’ve done short contemporary. (sweet) Long contemporary suspense. I’ve done non fiction how to. Middle school aged book. Straight suspense. An historical. After trying all those type of books, I finally settled on the long contempoary or single title relationshipy romance.

Who has tried the most kinds of stories? Have you tried other genres or sub genres? And how did you end up writing the types of books you do now?

Agent Talk

okay, let’s talk agents. The good, the bad, the ugly.

So…do you have an agent as an unpublished author? (or did you get one before you were published?) Have you met him/her in person? And how did you find him/her? At a conference? Query/submission? Contest?

If you are looking for an agent (or looking to change) what is your dream agent? Do want one who is hands on and sends stuff back to you to revise before she sends it out? Do you want more of a “here is an idea of how you might improve it” but less…”DO THIS before I send it.” Or do you want a hands off agent who just knows the business and knows it well and will submit the work you send her.

And…to ask yet more questions. How do you feel about agents begin in NYC, versus agents being from other parts of the country?

Okay, more things to talk about. Would you get an agent if you’re trying to break into category?

Who Reads Your Writing?

okay after a weekend of just sporatic internet. (I’m SO done with Charter Internet. Never could get through on the phones. Sent an email…got a reply that it needed to be handled with a phone support. They are having MAJOR problems here in the midwest. And I’m leaving them for DSL. This was the last straw. Then when I called on Monday they said “In order to give our employees the day off, there is no technical support.” :biteme:)

Okay, I digress…back to the topic at hand…Who do you let read your work? Do you have non-writer people read it? Does your dh? Your mom? Your best friend? Your daughter?

I haven’t had any non-writer people read my work. I always tell them I’ll let them after I sell. Now, my dh reads “male books” Action adventure, gory murder, legal thrillers, medical thrillers, etc. Somehow I think that a romance will not be exactly up his alley. Though I’ll be ticked off if he doesn’t offer/want to read/actually read my first book sold. He’s married to me. It’s like his job or something… :mad2:

So who is reading your writing???
