A circular route to plotting

okay, you know those bam, bam, bam ideas I got a few weeks ago? Well I started one them after getting over my Fear of First Page (tm). So I wrote the first chapter, and rewrote it…and finally on the third try came up with a real live keep it chapter.

This story is so weird. I know what’s happening with the plot…most of the way through. But I couldn’t nail the GMC. Of either the hero or the heroine… Not the best way to start a story. So I was beginning to panic. I mean…would these people PLEASE talk to me :secret: and tell me what they wanted??

So in an effort to keep myself sane…I retreated to the bathtub :bath: of course. I do my best plotting there. So I leaf through a magazine (I’ve noticed that helps) and then BAM. :mad2: I figured out the GMC for both the hero and heroine. Backstory. Why they wanted what they wanted. Why they couldn’t have it. Secrets from the past. It was so obvious…why didn’t I think of it myself??

I jumped out of the tub and rushed to the computer and did a two page mind dump of everything I had thought of in the tub. You know, I case my mind like a steel trap (get serious! )didn’t cooperate for long.

So have you ever started into a story where you have a vague idea where you’re going, some major points, how it going to end…but no idea of the GMC?? :crazy2: Trust me, it’s not for the faint of heart.

What’s the craziest way you’ve started or plotted a book?

PS…I’m STILL not totally convinced I have the right name for my her0ine…

Let’s Talk Writing Books

I love to read nonfiction writing books. I can usually get some glimmer of an ah-ha moment, or some gem of information. I don’t think you can ever learn too much about a subject you’re interested in. Sometimes when I’m stuck on a particular part of my story…characterization or plot of whatever…I’ll pick up a writing book and browse through it. Quite often that will help me break loose.

So what writing books do you like? They can be inspirational like BIRD BY BIRD by Anne Lamont, or upping your creativity like THE ARTIST’S WAY like Julia Cameron, or nitty gritty get down and write like Deb Dixon’s GMC. (Goal, Motivation, and Conflict). Do you have some favorite books you browse through when your stuck? Or did one book give you and ah-ha moment about your writing? What have been some of your favorite writing books?

I’m back

Sorry for the week off. It was a rough week. A long time friend of the family died last week and it hit me really hard. She’d lived next door to us from when I was in 4th grade on. She was like a second mom to me. My parents still live next door to her, so we’d still see her often. A wonderful lady whom everyone loved. That kind of person.

She turned me onto The Wiliamsburg Series of books by Elswyth Thane. What wonderful romances those were! Elswyth made it seem like you were right there with those families in those books. I’m going to go out online and buy the series I’ve decided. . . hopefully some of the orginally old ones, and not the reprints. And read them all again…in order. A fitting tribute to our neighbor, Betty. The world doesn’t seem quite right without her in it. So here’s a toast to the people who’ve enriched our lives, and to the people who first introduced us to romances.
