Naming Game

No not characters. The month. Those of you who read here know that my critique group names each month. And it’s time for February!

Fearless February
Fantastic February (too bland)
Fervent February
Fired Up February (kind of like that one)
Fireball Febrary (what, you expect less from a Rudolph movie lover like me? And if you don’t know who Fireball is, shame on you…)(okay, I’ll tell you. He’s the reindeer who scuffles with Rudolph and knocks off his black coverup nose…and unveils the very shiney red nose. Then they won’t let poor Rudolph join in any Reindeer games… )

Any other great suggestions??

Another one bites the dust

and another one’s gone and another one’s gone…out the door. Winging it’s way to NYC. Wish me luck. I love this story…

Now on to another proposal. For Super this time. I like this story too, but I’m not at the point where I LOVE it. I’m not far enough into the characters’ heads just yet. I have to really write a bit, throw out some, write some more, change their names, etc, etc…until I really can start to LOVE what I’m writing.

When do you fall in love with your story and your characters? At the thinking /pre writing stage? After 3 chapters? When you’re headed to the finish line? Do you LOVE what you write? (well, except for those days when you’re sure it’s all crap? )

SO obvious

okay, so in doing some critiquing with my group the last few weeks, I’ve noticed I can read a chapter of theirs, synopsis, whatever…and immediately pick out what isn’t working. I can nail who doesn’t have a strong GMC. I can see a backstory dump written in the first chapter. (I do this one myself SO often :wallbash: )

So why, when I reread my own work can’t I see these things? Why can’t I immediately (or even after a few cups of coffee… :coffee:) realize I have to cut that 3 page backstory dump? Why can’t I see that I don’t really KNOW what is motivating my heroine? Why do I pretend I have GMC nailed, when the story is weak because some part of it is missing?

Can you pick out obvious things like this on your critique buds’ work, but read yours a million times and then have to say DAMMIT duh! when they point it out to you? What’s up with that? :crazy2:
