Following up on the black and white challenge last month, I thought we’d try a Still Life Challenge this month.
This was actually a shot my son took for his photography class. They needed a “product shot”. Okay, that’s a good product shot. And don’t you just LOVE the name of the wine? He got it from my brother-in-law’s Wine Shop. Yes, that’s right, I have a wine shop in the family, can you ask for much more out of life???
But let’s up the stakes a bit. How about a still life with some striking lighting on it? (I hope he remembers not to put that good Henckel knife in the dishwasher!)
Now, I’ve never really tried to take a still life shot of anything much. Some flowers, some food, a bottle of Corona. 😆 This time I’m going to think outside the box and come up with something really different. And play with the lighting. Anyone want to join in? Grab a handful of anything in your house and take a still life photo of it. Extra bonus points for some striking lighting on it.
So send me your links by Sunday noon, to a post with your photo, or a link directly to the photo on your website, or a link to a photo on Flickr or a photo sharing site. (you can use the contact form at the top of the page, or email it to me) I’ll post all the links on next Monday’s post, (March 17) along with my attempt at still life photography.
I have to say that it’s really cool to share a hobby with my son. We talk lighting and lenses. He promises to teach me a bunch of photoshop tricks over spring break. And of course we’ll take photos the whole time we’re on spring break. Road trip to Gulf Shores anyone??
So have you tried your hand at still life photography, or really unusual lighting? Any tips? Are you going to join in the fun? I’d ask my son to join us, but since we’ve already seen two of his shots I don’t think we want him competing with us! 😯
Nice product shots! Give that boy a big thumbs up!
I’ll think about it. I usually don’t do still life. Or maybe I do and don’t think about it. I will pass this on to someone I think will enjoy it, though!
Hi Kacey,
Country Girl (Kate) sent me here. I’d love to participate. I’ll choose something and shoot it out to you soon. What fun to have such a talented son!
xoxo,
Mary
Love your son’s still lifes! I did some still life photography donkey years ago for a photography course I took. They weren’t that good. *g*
Country Girl, I don’t usually do still lifes either. Which is why I wanted to try my hand at them.
Mary, thanks for popping by! Can’t wait so see your shots.
Tori, I’ve never taken a photography course. Now, of course, I wish I would have taken one in school at some point in time.
If by still life you mean the life forms in my photos are still, sometimes I do that. Sometimes my cats, or nieces & nephews, won’t sit still long enough to get them in focus, so sometimes they’re not still lifes.
My BIL (the Italian Chefwannabe) absolutely adores his Henckel knives. He poo-poos my Wolfgang Puck knives. I say ‘Fine, you buy me Henckel for Christmas and I’ll switch’. I haven’t gotten any yet…
Wah! 😥 I need a digital camera! (Mine is on the fritz!)
Wowser! Tell your son his photos are great……that second one….really cool !
Love the lime in the orange!
