The Perfect Finch Picture

by Kay~Kacey on 4/20/2008

So remember when I had SuperGuy and The Geeky One move my finch feeder up closer to the house? So I could get the perfect finch picture?

Well, the finches seem to like the OTHER feeder that is still far away from the house.

finches at the feeder

They flock to the feeder that is far away. Too far to get a good zoom picture of them. The twits.

finch in redbud

They hang out in the redbud tree. Behind a branch. The twits.

finch with turned head

If they do come up to the close up feeder…they turn their head as soon as I grab my camera. The twits.

three finches

Here are some who finally come to the close up feeder. Of course, not the full out pretty yellow ones. These haven’t finished turning yellow yet. They are a mottled gray. How nice. 🙄

one yellow finch

As God is my witness they’re not going to lick me. I’m going to live through this and when it’s all over, I’ll never be hungry again. (no wait! that’s not it!) But as my blogger friends as my witness, I’ll never go hungry I’ll get the perfect finch picture before the summer is over!! Or else. (or else what? I don’t know. It just sounded good. I’m thinking I might need a new zoom lens or something to get better pictures…you know, since you guys think SuperGuy should keep his darn groundcover and bribe me off with camera gear… )

As a total aside. I just looked I have over 660 pics in my April picture folder. Those are only the ones I haven’t already deleted… Do you take that many pictures?? I try and delete obvious losers as I load them onto my computer..so I shudder to think how many I’ve actually taken. Then I go through at the end of the month and weed out more. But, while I’m sure there are people who take more. I sure take a ton of pictures. We’re only half way through the month. Oh, wait! We’re 2/3 of the way through the month. I feel so much better.

Beautiful pictures. Finch’s are so pretty and colorful.

I feel your finch pain. Been there….many times!

My camera memory card will hold 1859 images. I’ve taken as many as 400 pictures on one day. Of course, the majority deserve nothing but the trash bin. It’s instant gratification at it’s finest. And I LOVE it!

Let’s have a finch-off! 😀

Becky April 20, 2008 at 9:43 am

The twits are very pretty, even far away! 😉
My family teases me because I take so many pictures. But I am not up there with you. YET. Looking at your beautiful pics inspires me to try to find the perfect shot.

At a gymnastics meet, I could take upwards of 600 pictures. Yes, 600, in one afternoon, of just ONE of my children. I’d have about 15 keepers in the bunch—just 15 that would be in focus, a good action shot, whatever. But I had to snap loads of pictures to find those gems.

Love your finches. I take loads of photos too, but not quite that many. The cool thing about digital is being able to take so many and then really getting some good ones. I mostly just see cars parked out my condo window 🙂 Would love to see a cool colored bird…

Christine April 20, 2008 at 10:43 am

bwhahahaha Love those finches! What a sense of humor!! (Of course I can say that because *I* am not the one trying to get photos of them! LOL)

Well, in the short time (less than a week I’ve had this new MAC) I’ve put 297 photos on it already. That’s actually really light as usually I take about 200+ a day. Most deserve the trash can! You know how it is for every 100 photos taken, you get 2 or 3 that are decent enough. 🙂

I don’t lable mine by the month, although I probably should. I label them “Early Spring”, “Spring”, “Late Spring”, etc. In Early Spring, I had over 800 photos and that was in a month’s time, I think.
My computer is beginning to run slow. I can’t even get into my gmail account today. This past week, using Photoshop, it’s been really sluggish, like taking long just to run a sharpen command. So, something’s up. I think I may have too many photos on it, but have 12.2 GB of free space. I dunno.
However, these finch pics are nice! I tried to get some yesterday but they, too, weren’t coming to the closer feeder! Funny it should happen to us at the same time. I also remember leaving a slightly tipsy comment last night, but oh well. And you did on mine, too!
Ok. Sorry this is so long. Something’s up with my pictures and I’m blaming you. Not really. It’s all my fault. I’ll get it figured out.

I don’t take as many pictures, YET. I need to get over my compulsion of keeping every photo…surely some of them are worthy of the trash can…but when I delete them I feel guilty…how crazy is THAT ❓ ❗

Kacey April 20, 2008 at 1:34 pm

Annbb-those 660 are only my “keepers.

MPM..an finch off! I’m up for it!

Becky, my family teases me too. I just don’t listen to them!

Amy, 600 of one child? You win!

ellen…here’s to hoping a bird comes and sits on your window sill.

Christine, I’m glad you’re a Mac convert. 300 photos while learning a new operating system is no slouch!

Kate, right, my fault for your computer problems. :mad2:

Lynellen, I used to feel guilty for deleting pics until my saved ones got out of control. Then I got over it quickly!

Misty Dawn April 20, 2008 at 1:55 pm

I know exactly how you are feeling. Sometimes I swear the birds here are conspiring against me and laughing at me the whole time 😉

You still got some great shots, in my opinion!

Tracey April 20, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Nothing like a little finch frustration…and I am game for trying to capture a pic of one too! I too have an up-close finch feeder. Actually, I have 3! 🙄 I know, a little much. But I will have to see what I can get with my new 5D!

Rosie's Whimsy April 20, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Well, I think your pictures are great as is! I love Golfinches. We have so many this year and they look like solid sunshine streaking through the trees 😆 Rosie

Connie April 20, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Your photos of the finches backs are lovely. Think of all the possibilites…you could identify them from their markings and give them names and do a mini documentary for PBS. I must be a photo rookie, I don’t take nearly as many pictures as everyone else. I’ll have to catch up.

Melissa Marsh April 21, 2008 at 12:48 pm

They are just gorgeous! I want to get some pics of the beautiful cardinals that we have around here.

Ivory Spring April 22, 2008 at 6:33 pm

Hi Kacey,

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I love the pictures of the finches and other backyard pictures. I am so sorry to hear about your tulips and grape hyacinths.
