Maternity Photography

by Kay~Kacey on 5/15/2008

Okay, maybe I’m the last to know this stuff… Maybe I’m showing my baby boomer age here…

Did you know that there is this whole market now for maternity photography? Where women bare their bellies and get their pictures taken?? I have seen some GORGEOUS shots when I googled maternity photography. Or here, look on Flickr. I just find this fascinating. And oh so very cool.

You see, when I was pregnant, you’d never show your belly! Ever! Nothing even slightly stretchy that might stretch and show your pregnant belly button! Oh, horrors!

I wore horrible, tent-like maternity dresses. I looked like a walking elephant dressed in a tutu! How could you help but feel overweight and not at your best when dressed like that??

I just find it so incredibly cool that women now think their bellies and bodies are wonderful when they are pregnant and get professional photos taken! You go girls!!

If you’re interested in learning more about portrait photography–Kids, Seniors, Weddings, Maternity, Newborn photography–I found this forum, I Love Photography, that holds a wealth of information. Geared more toward photographers who want to earn money from their photography, but really, you can learn a whole lot there from color casts, composition, lighting, etc. etc. Since I’m all about learning more about photography this year, I find the site fascinating.

Do do you have any great maternity photos from when you were pregnant? I’m not sure I even have more than maybe one snapshot from when I was pregnant. Maternity photography. Who knew? Which brings me back to, why am I just now hearing about this type of photography?

I know what you mean! I love that ladies show their bellies, now….but in my day….unheard of! Didn’t we miss out?

My daughter is 8 weeks from delivery and she is beautiful in her tight t-shirts and skirts!

My husband took some photos of me exposing my big, bare bellies with the navels pointing straight out. They’re small photos that I’ve though about framing.

Looking back, I wish I’d had classy formal photos done. I loved Demi Moore’s Vanity Fair cover years ago.

Oh, well, a shot of a pregnant me will never happen now!

I have a picture of me, pregnant. But not bare. No way! Now I have a picture of my daughter when pregnant with her first child, just delivered in Feb., showing her bare belly. I think modesty was more of an issue then.

Sorry, but I just can’t seem to get used to this trend. I don’t consider myself a prude, and I do think a woman’s body, pregnant or not, is beautiful. I just don’t like the tight maternity clothing or the baring of a pregnant belly in public.

I’m a freak, yes, but I loved everything about being pregnant, including the way I felt and looked. I loved the more traditional maternity wear; I also loved soft, flowing, peasant-like maternity tops my daughter wore when she was pregnant 5 years ago.

Just my two cents…

When I was pregnant with my twins, my belly button stretched so far that it was completely gone. Nada. It was interesting to say the least. And I wore tents. Big multicolored tents. 😎

The photographer that is doing my headshots also does maternity photography. I’ve seen some of her work and they’re great shots.

Since I was pregnant a million years ago, I, too came from the land of the ugly tent dress. God, maternity clothes were ugly back then! And nary a scrap of skin was allowed to show. Ever!

Not so much. Maybe because I never looked pregnant till the ninth month. Just fat. My babies sat to the back and spread everything wide before the belly protruded. Not a fan. Sorry.

I think it’s really cool how maternity fashion has changed. Women wear clingy clothes that show off their preggo tummy. Wish I hadn’t missed that. I had the tent stuff…. ugh.

I think the pregnant belly pictures are wonderful for the women who like and enjoy having them done, but for myself, no way. When I was pg in the boomer days it seemed everything Iwore was like a sailor suit with some stupid big bow somewhere on it. That was also about all I could find anywhere to wear. Now times I have a hard time telling a maternity outfit from any other type of outfit.

My daughter looked great when she was pregnant – I wore the huge huge huge maternity stuff that made me look twice the size I was. It was a bit much to me when one of my daughter’s friends sent out monthly emails with pics of her naked tummy. TMI!

I have pregnant photos, but fully clothed ones. I had so many stretch marks I wasn’t baring that belly to anyone! I do think that they are beautiful though.

Never had my bare belly photographed, but I do have other shots of when I was pregnant – each one showing me bigger than the last one!

I have shots of my growing belly but never bared either. I don’t know. Maybe I am old fashioned but I could never feel comfortable “baring it all”. I do think that today’s maternity photography is very artistic and gorgeous. I just could never do it. Unless all my “battle scars” and cellulite was photoshopped out! 😆

This is too much. These girls these days don’t miss any chance at all to look good. I’m happy for them. They celebrate everything!! I looked like a beached whale pregant. I’m only 5 ft. tall and gained 40+ pounds. UGH!!
