My mother gave it to me as we left the US for a four year tour in Italy. She told me that whenever I felt down in the dumps to put a candle in the middle, light it, and my family would have their arms around me, just as the terra cotta people have their arms around each other. The first thing I thought of is a rough cast brass cannon barrel with no carriage under it that laid on the floor of the entryway for years and was sort of used as a door stop....mostly it is something for me to trip over or stub my toe on. It is heavy! I'm looking at a foam "Yellow Submarine" sitting on the computer desk. Way too much weird stuff here! I'll probably think of more now that you have me looking! I've given them as gifts. Most people place a candle in the center. I have an end table a friend made and gave to me that was a cast-off piece of wrought iron furniture of some sort she picked up on trash day.
