What the world needs now

is love, sweet love.

(You don’t really want me to start singing do you??)
Love Thursday

Kitty Love

Sometimes it’s hard to turn on the TV or radio these days. There is so much hatred and name calling going around. I remember some nasty elections, but I think this one is starting to take the cake. Maybe because the way we get our news has changed so much. When I was growing up there were our city newspapers (two of them at the time, one with a liberal slant, one with a conservative slant). There were the 3 main networks. Now there are tons of all day news stations. Blogs. Websites. Twitter. Fact checking sites.

Now I’m not going to start talking politics on this blog. It’s my “safe place.” Oh, I love a good political debate as much as the next person. It’s just that I don’t believe calling people whose beliefs are different yours names. I don’t think all their views are necessarily wrong. I don’t think all Republicans are this way, X, and all Democrats are that way, Z. I don’t think it’s that simple. I think that each person has a right to their opinion, based upon their world view.

Maybe the facelessness (is TOO a word!) of the internet has given rise to some of this hatred. I think people feel free to spout off things on the net that they’d never say to a person’s face. The Twitter stream gets ugly during the debates. I just wish people could get back to talking about the issues. Without the twisting of the facts to suit each particular campaign. And for the record, I think EACH campaign has done this. I wish people could talk rationally and respectfully about their different views. I wish people could respect the other person’s right to have a differing view. That’s part of what makes living in the United States so great. We do have the right to our opinion.

I’m not saying not to get passionate about things you believe in. Work for the candidate of your choice. I just wish more people could discuss the issues civilly. I guess it all comes back to that I was raised that if you lose your temper….you lose. I don’t think feeling passionate about politics has to include “losing” it, name calling, the other side is so stupid.

One more comment. To whomever came up with the brilliant idea of computerized-no-real-person-on-the-other-end-of-the-line phone calls during dinnertime? So not a good idea. (in my opinion  )

I guess I wish people were more like my cats. At the end of the day, they still get along, no matter what disagreements they’ve had during the day.

And this is as close as you’ll ever get to a political discussion on this blog.

  1. :mad2: Amen.

  2. Amen to that!

  3. I totally agree. This is one of the nastiest elections I have ever seen. I had actually prepared a post quite similar to this one, but was a little afraid to post it. Maybe tomorrow…

    xoxo,
    Mary

  4. And in agreement, Amen also. My local newspaper, now online, has added a “comments” section at the end of each article. I cannot go there. It is too disheartening to me to know that I share the planet with people whose opinions are filled with so much unhappiness and hatred. No television since 2000 and now minimal newspaper. What next? Please keep blogging, its my saftey net of sanity!

Whoever came up with this needs to taken out and shot. Not that I have any strong opinions or anything. *g*

  6. 1. Amen…great point!

  9. I totally agree with your sentiments, and your cats are so cute!

  10. Oh, good. At first I thought you were going political on me. Cute kitties. Love the black against the blue chair.

    :coffee2:
    hello

  11. Kate, not a chance I’d go all political on my blog. No chance. None.

cgreno–our local paper has outrageous comments too. Sigh. :cursing:

  12. I can’t stand to watch the news anymore…..

  13. There’s a huge difference between being passionate and being a zealot. Wish all could figure out zealot is never ever good.
    Nice, thoughtful post, Kacey.

And bless those cats - they “know” a lot!

  14. I could not believe what I read! I agreed with every single thing you wrote! It is just SO good to hear someone say it so well. :)
And…lol..we wear the same makeup. I love it and wear it every day. Light and wonderful. Quick and easy and I don’t feel bad about answering the door. :)
Just loved your blog. Will visit again.
    Take GOOD care!
    Mona

  15. Amen! :mad2:

Why can’t we all just get along? Like your cats for instance . . . they’re just beautiful!

  16. Wowsa, I couldn’t agree more. We are ALL Americans, and whoever gets in is OUR President when all is said and done. I just don’t get all the rancor. We can express our views by voting, and that’s what will get the job done in the end. (Love your emoticons!) :typing:
