By doing this now I can thin and shorten thebranches without removing the new growth that puts out the color in the fall. The bush isn't "smooth" or square but it is shorter and not as leggy and still colors every fall. Conventional hedge trimmers are not the answer on these bushes. They are so beautiful in the fall and the birds love the little red berries in the fall. Ours have lost all of their leaves now.
