Why would I buy

by Kay~Kacey on 4/16/2009

Why would I buy a silver butter dish that I don’t even like. Not even a little bit?

It’s tarnished, I don’t like the little acorn thingie on top…and it’s a light weight silver plate. Really not what I’m looking for in an Antique Mall find. At. All.

But I bought it anyway. Why would you do that, Kacey? Glad you asked that question!

SuperGuy found it on our last shopping expedition. He held it up and asked me if I wanted it. I looked at him like he was nuts. I mean, I’ve been known to rescue poor cracked lonely milk glass, but this silver butter dish was so not me. Even if I do like to polish silver. He pulled off the top of it and showed me the secret!!

I bought it for this!

Yes, I bought it for the glass insert! Now, before you guys going thinking that SuperGuy and I are nuts. I have this really nice silver butter dish that I use for fancy dinners. But somewhere along the line the glass insert was lost. I looked every where for one. None would fit. Tried ordering one online. No luck. So every time I have a fancy dinner, my Mom lends me her glass insert. I’m sure she gets tired of it, and I KNOW she thinks I’m going to steal it. Now do I look like the kind of daughter who would steal from her very own mother??  Don’t answer that…

Now, finally, my life is complete. I have my own insert for my butter dish. Which I should have dug out and taken a picture of for this post. But then I’d have to get out the silver polish…and then I’d see a silver tray or two that needed polishing…and then maybe that pretty silver candy dish would need some spiffing up. Well, you see where that would have gone.  I might not have popped back into existence for days and DAYS. You’re welcome.

Well, that’s my rather long winded story of my new glass butter dish insert. My stories always seem to be a bit circuitous, don’t they? (Love that word circuitous…)

I kind of like the old tarnished butter dish thingy. No clue what I’d do with one, though. *g*

Love a happy ending. You can donate the tarnished butter dish to charity and everyone wins.

I totally get your purchase. I’m still looking for the perfect butter dish. 🙂

You are not alone! I once bought a lamp just for the glass shade.

and thestory of the polishing, though too true, is reminiscent of “if you give a mouse a cookie”. So true of even the simplest of projects.

You found a piece of history. I received a butter dish exactly like that one in 1964. Mine looks exactly like yours,,,unpolished, and it will stay that way. It lives in the bottom of the china closet. Nice find

I found your story because i have spent hours and hours on line looking for
exactly the same thing.. A glass butter dish insert.
We have a copper dish that my son let slip and the glass hit the floor…
I know there must be a manufacturer of these somewhere in the world but I’ve had no such luck as you.
Anyone have any suggestions.
