Kacey, I had to update my comment. I am in Duck right now and I LOVE it. I've actually been coming to OBX about 10 years(not 5 as I mentioned above) but I've never been to Duck. It is so cute and has such a different feel than the other places I've been in OBX. The town of Duck is really cute. I won't go into detail because I'm sure you've heard a lot, but I just wanted to say that I've changed my mind... after a loooooong time of coming here. :o)

We have vacationed in OBX almost every summer for the past five years... maybe more. However, I am actually not a huge fan of OBX. It's just not my "style" of beach I guess. I spent part of my childhood in San Diego and I just love the west coast beaches... palm trees, cliffs, tidal pools, surfers :o) etc. OBX is very flat, lots of sand dunes, huge houses... That being said, I think I am the only person I know who goes there who isn't gaga over it. All my friends love it... LOVE it. And the beaches are very clean and quiet. Lots of room. We've stayed all over. We are going to Duck in June. OBX is very family friendly and relaxing. I'm sure like most people you will love it. If you like the wild horses and want to get a little more adventurous try Vieques (http://www.vieques-island.com) and here's a house to rent: http://casaquerico.com.

Hey- my friend just went to the Dominican Republic, and got a SMASHING deal on a 4 star resort, all inclusive, and said the resort was just beautiful. He said off the resort property it immediately gets extremely poor, and there is nothing to do off-resort. There is a ton of stuff to do on-resort though. He also said they went snorkeling/scuba diving there, and it was terrible- the reefs were all dead or uninhabited. If you're going to just stay on-resort, its definitely worth it, but not if you're planning to do other things. Their hotel was walk-out into the pool- it was pretty cool. Let me know if you want more info.

Outer banks is the bomb! Rent a house. Corolla is the nicest with lots of quiet, if you like your vacations that way. Plenty of shopping and good places for long walks :bath:

I've gone to the Outer Banks even before it became popular. First year was 1979. We always stayed in Hatteras Dunes, down by the ferry landing. Then in the early 90's we started staying in Ocracoke, an island accessible by ferry only. I adore Ocracoke but it's too hot for my husband anymore. It's a drive to the beach, but it's not far. We've even camped there but I strongly recommend against it because sometimes it's so hot and the bugs are too much.
We've stayed at lots of houses in Hatteras but the beaches aren't what they used to be.
Corolla is beautiful!!!! And you can walk to the beach.
I am so jealous because I love the beach at Ocracoke. If you need to know anything more, e-mail me. We have stayed at the Pirate's Quay right on the harbor. The 3rd floor is awesome. Awesome!! No elevators, though!

If you are considering the Outer Banks, renting is the way to go, but you may not find availabilities to your liking.
As for me, I like staying in the country...but that is just me.

I am the gal that works with annbb. I have a vacation home in Corolla. It is is a development called Whalehead Beach. Might be big for just the two of you but it is a block and a half away from the beach with great ocean and sound views. We have been vacation in the OBX since 1992 and love it! September is the best time to be there. Fewer crowds and the best weather (unless there is a hurricane). I would not recommend Carova during hurricane season since you need to drive on the beach to get to a house. If the sea is rough that makes it tough. We live about 10 hours away and go down many times a year. We do an overnight each way just to make it easier on all of us (Jr. Birdman (7), Fly Boy (my significant other) and Hope (the dog)). Check out this web site of places to stay brindleybeachvacation.com. Our house is WW904. Don't let the size scare you as the prices drop in the off season and it would be nice to have room to roam. Have also done the DR thing. Nice with a male companion but I would suggest you look at the past hurricane seasons....they are in the direct path of most storms! I can offer lots of advice on the OBX is you wish more.
