A Bird in The Hand

by Kay~Kacey on 3/31/2010

wreath-birds-nest-6036So I go over to The Geeky One’s house and see this cute wreath on his front door. Now, I’m pretty sure he’s never bought a wreath in his whole life…though I guess he knows what one is…

I’m fairly certain this was The Adorable Fiancee’s addition to the home…

Anyway, she was telling me how the wreath was getting bare because the birds were coming and stealing pieces of it for their nests.

The Geeky One dutifully points out to me the offending nest…

BUT WAIT!

What do we spy behind the wreath???

The birds have made their nest right on the door, behind the wreath!!

So, now the dilemma, do they stop using their front door until the little baby birds are hatched? (I don’t think there are eggs yet). Do they go out the back door? Through the garage? Or do they take down the wreath and the nest and let their door go naked??

I’m glad it’s not MY decision to make! I’m a great mom. I don’t offer unsolicited advice.  (much). 😉

A bird in the hand is worth two in the wreath. I’m sure you’ve heard that saying before…

Step #1 is to check for eggs. If there are some then leave the nest where it is. If not then I would remove the nest since we use our front door all the time, multiple times a day. It’s lovely though… the wreath that is and I have one exactly like it in my front foyer. It’s soooo springy

If it were on my door I would leave it and let nature take it’s course. It would fascinating to watch the babies that close to my house. Really close. In fact if it were me it would be a huge photo opportunity and make some great videos. But that’s me and not the young couple.

Birds built a nest in the Xmas wreath I neglected to take down. Our wreath was on the front door till the end of April. It was not pretty. And we didn’t use that door.

Last year a cardinal mommie built a nest in a dumb place next to our front door, on a plant stand. We loved watching the eggs hatch and, unlike the most of the human species, both parents took care of the babies. The babies were just starting to practice flying when nature took its course. Overnight a cat or racoon got the nest and babies, little feathers and stuff all over. I broke down and cried. Older son rolled eyes, younger son got misty, too.

That’s a tough call. I’d be tempted to leave it if there are eggs, but then there’s the mess to consider on that lovely door. Bird poo’s not pretty, and it’s hard on paint. Glad it’s not my dilemma.

I agree…if no eggs, then take it down. Otherwise I’d leave it and use another door until they fledge. And you can clean the mess….

That’s cool. I bet if you just moved the whole thing over three feet or so and hung it on the wall, they’d keep using the nest. I might try that so long as there weren’t already eggs in it.

What Di and Mama said. Check first. If no eggs, remove the nest. They will go somewhere else.
Beautiful photo of that front door, too.

OH…I don’t know what I would do…I would love the photo op..but worry about critters getting the babies..and the mess…if there were no eggs i think I would move it…maybe…maybe not…I am now confused and worried, please share the outcome 😕
