This Year’s Hanging Monkey

by Kay~Kacey on 1/9/2009

This year’s Hanging Monkey…

….is a duck!

hanging stuffed animals

I explained the start of our hanging monkey tradition here. My mom gets them for the boys’ stockings every year. We have quite the assortment of animals.

hanging ducks

I now have them hanging all around my house. Their magnetic feet stick to the metal corners on the drywall. I also seem to have one extra duck this year. I think one of my nephews must be missing his…

press here

The boys’ favorite part of this year’s hanging “monkey”? The press here button! And if I’m REALLY lucky they press all 5 buttons at at the same time so I can have a symphony of quacking going on all at once. How special! :crazy2: Ah, the holiday traditions in this house!

Cow Tree

by Kay~Kacey on 12/23/2008

A cow tree? Okay, you’re thinking “what the heck is Kacey talking about.” Seriously, I can hear you thinking that!

Well, I showed you some of our ornaments…but I didn’t get into our fascination with cow ornaments…

singing cow ornament

Our family has a thing about cows… among other strange traditions. Okay, that’s another long story for a different post…but we do indulge our addiction just a bit with our Christmas ornaments. I think this guy actually sang or mooed at one time…

A Christmas Cow scrubby ornament. Who knew? Betcha you don’t have one of those!

farmer cow ornament

This cute little farmer-cow-bell (multipurpose everything!) ornament. We have more cow ornaments, but you get the picture.

cow christmas lights

We even have a strand of cow Christmas lights! Yes, not everyone can claim they have those on their tree!

We have just a few strange traditions regarding our tree that have evolved over the years…like this one:

Christmas star

Our Christmas star…always tilted at a crazy angle. That then got a Jack-in-the-box ornament hung from him the next year…and every year after. That then got the Integra emblem and key from The Geeky One’s first car….that The Impish One totalled a few years ago… 😯 (He was okay, it’s all good) Who knows what will get added to the star as the years go by…

That cute little Christmas dolly used to be at the top of our tree. Sigh. Those days are long gone.

I want a hanging monkey

by Kay~Kacey on 12/8/2008

You know how we have a few strange holiday traditions? Well, we have the hanging monkey tradition too.

hanging animals

Each year the boys get a “hanging animal” in their stockings from my mother. You know, the ones with the velcro hands and feet so they can hang from stuff. Why do they get them? Good question.

So the tradition began…

My mom and dad took all the boys to the zoo…well, a lot of years ago. We were standing there at the zoo, when some kid beside us starting having a melt down. You know the one. When the parents have kept a kid out way WAY past the time the kid should have been home napping. A vendor was selling these hanging animals. The little kid was crying that he wanted a hanging monkey. “I want a hanging monkey!” The mom replies. “No, you can’t have one.” Little kid whines and stamps his foot. “I WANT a hanging monkey.” On and on and on.

One of MY boys piped up to my mom…”Can I have a hanging monkey?” I shot him my best “mom look”. The next boy piped up. “I want a hanging monkey too.” One more mom look hoping to squelch my boys in their tracks. The next boy “I WANT a hanging MONKEY.” By then I catch on that they are pulling my leg and they’re all laughing at me, trying to see how long it will take me to catch on. We went through the ENTIRE zoo with my crazy boys :crazy2: saying “I want a hanging monkey!!” at every turn. :wallbash: Emphasis on a different word in the phrase each time. My mom just laughed along with them, asked for a hanging monkey a few times herself :mad2: and a good day was had by all.

hanging monkeys

The next Christmas?? the boys all had hanging monkeys in their stockings. Ever since then, mom has found some kind of hanging animal to put in their stockings. Then it degenerated to the UGLIEST hanging animal she can find. One year we went as far as calling them hanging uglies! As you can see they have quite a collection. As a bonus, as you can see by the hanging COWS on the wall…some of the hanging animals have magnets in their hands and feet and the boys can hang them on the metal drywall corners around the house…

Oh, and the Camp Ozark tshirts? Another post for another day…

So I don’t know what you guys are getting for Christmas, but rest assured that my boys will be getting hanging monkeys!
