The Holy Grail of Makeup

by Kay~Kacey on 10/8/2008

What IS the best makeup?

Now, I know some of you are going to pipe up and say you don’t wear makeup. Ever. Or very often. I used to be able to say that in my early forties. I really did. I’d tan my face and be done with it except for special occasions. But, WOW, when I hit fifty? Needed that makeup. I wear it almost everyday, even just sitting around the house.

Okay, part of it is that I’ve made a concerted effort in the last few years to avoid suntans. A brush with a skin cancer spot will usually scare even die hard sunners into the shade. I wear moisturizer every day that contains sunscreen. Without the whole healthy blush of a bit of sun…I wasn’t really liking the whole naked face thing. Okay, and the face staring back at me in the mirror? It was my MOTHER. Almost. But heavy, gunky powders or liquid makeup? Not really loving that much either.

bare minerals makeup

So I discovered Bare Minerals Makeup and never looked back. (no, I’m not getting paid for this.)

They are a bit pricey, but you can get a trial of them. Which I did. Then I kept adding to the collection.

makeup case

I keep the ones I use most days in this fancy, expensive makeup case. Expensive makeup deserves an expensive house, right? 🙄 Okay, okay, okay…it’s a plastic pencil case from the office supply store. You don’t think I just haunt the office supply store for, like, actual office supplies do you? There are so many other great toys supplies there.

chanel kabuki makeup brush

Well, to go along with the addiction, you need the right makeup brushes, right? I confess, before I got this expensive Chanel kabuki brush I didn’t love the Bare Minerals as much as I do now. It took a bit to learn to get the right amount of makeup. Not too much, but enough. I think I look almost like I’m not wearing makeup. It’s very natural. Or I can sparkle it up when I want to go fancier.

makeup brushes

It’s all in the brushes, I swear. Well, okay, I’ll give credit to the makeup too.

How about you guys? Do you wear makeup? Have you found your holy grail of makeup? Or are you one of those lucky (or daring) never wear makeup type women?

I started using mineral powder as well, and I find it SO much better than normal ones. Much more subtle… The only problem is that I us BeneTint for my cheeks, and it doesn’t work very well on mineral powder!

I’m a 50+ Bare Minerals addict too. Wish it was around in my earlier years. I’ve found that my complexion has actually improved since using it. Love it, love it, love it!

 I LOVE Bare Minerals! I bought it for the first time this summer and I love the finished look it gives my skin. I do agree it’s a bit expensive and it doesn’t last that long but I think it’s worth it! I still only have the starter kit there. Looks like you’ve got me beat!

Yep, I’m one of the ones who almost never wear makeup. I might put some on if I’m getting photos made or something like that.

I used to wear it almost daily (when I worked in the corporate world) but gave it up along with the job.

Maybe I “need” it, maybe I don’t…LOL! Some of my girl friends say I do, but hubby says I don’t. Either way, I’m choosing not to wear wear makeup or to color my hair anymore.

That said, if I do decide I need to wear it, what I have is probably so old, I’d have to buy new stuff…in which case I’d go with the familiar and cheap…Cover Girl.

Well, every free spirit , natural woman I know finally gave in. I turned 60 in September and probably started a sloe progression of makeup and haircolor in my mid 40’s. Although I dont consider myself high maintenance, I also no longer try to justify feeling like I look better with some artificial help! I adore L’Occitaine face products and Jane Iredale mineral based makeup, a little goes a long way! I also added Botox and Restelayne to the mix last summer for my daughters wedding…..I guess I have become high maintenance after all! Darnnit. But guess what ? I feel great about how I look and that affects everything I do.

I’ve heard good things about Bare Minerals. May have to try it some day!

I am not much of a make-up gal. Hate the time it takes to put on. 😉

I rarely wear makeup, but the frequency is increasing as I age. I use Mineral Fusion. Good coverage, can’t feel it at all when it’s on your face.

I don’t wear makeup unless I’m performing. Could be that I’m lazy. Could be my age. One woman I worked for once looked at me after I made some smart aleck remark and said, “Shelly, you are over 50 aren’t you?” I said yes. She replied, “I knew it. Once a woman reaches 50, things don’t matter as much as they used to. You have joined the ‘I Don’t Give A S*** Club,’ and I’m your President.” She let ME be the President of Vice.

I envy your makeup Kacey, and dang you take good pictures. But, it’s too much work for me. What they see is what they get.

I don’t wear much makeup (I’m 33) but I probably could use it! I’m going to look into bare minerals, I’ve heard so much good about that line!

Tori Lennox October 8, 2008 at 1:47 pm

I haven’t worn makeup in years. I don’t even remember the last time. 😐

iPost October 8, 2008 at 3:30 pm

I hear great stuff about Bare Minerals, but never have tried. i guess i will have to go for the free trial!

Lorie October 8, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I used to not wear makeup, but more and more I have started to feel like I need it! Ah! Aging! My SIL highly recommends bare minerals.

I’m embarrassed to say I wear Clinique. not MUCH, but it’s Clinique. I love their free gift time of year…

Stephanie October 8, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Alright you convinced me. I’m going to have to give it a try. I just ran out of regular make up too.

Kate October 8, 2008 at 6:34 pm

I’be been using Bare Minerals for several years now and LOVE it. I just got Nars blush and it’s beautiful. I also have some Chanel. I switched mascaras after 30 years. And why am I telling you all this? I can’t believe I just did a perfume post.
Are we girly girls or WHAT?

I rarely wear make up but when I do it is the Bare Minerals. If I had time I’d wear it more, I really like it. You can find some of the kits at Costco which really helps. I didn’t believe it would cover as well as it does. Looks real natural.

Kacey R. October 8, 2008 at 8:00 pm

Hi! I found you from Lorie’s blog. I’ve never met another Kacey who spells their name the same! So I had to come over and introduce myself. Love your post about the make-up. My friend swears by Bare Minerals. I use the Maybelline version. I don’t have anything to compare it too, but I love it! 😛

Deb. October 8, 2008 at 8:38 pm

I use Jergens natural glow daily moisturizer. I look naturally tan without the sun, love it.

Sandra October 8, 2008 at 9:48 pm

Do I wear make-up? Long ago, when we had a fire at our house and Hubby turned off the electricity until the fire dept. got there, I put on my make-up in the dark, so that the firemen wouldn’t see bare faced!

I had bad skin as a teenager and make-up became my life-long friend. And, I’ve never tanned much so I also need the “healthy glow” make-up provides.

Suzanne October 8, 2008 at 9:51 pm

I LOVE Bare Minerals!!!!

Toni October 11, 2008 at 5:41 am

I am a bare escentuals girl all the way. I love the stuff.

Sara October 12, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Hi! I wandered in from Twitter Mom’s Blogging Mom’s. 🙂 Visit me if you get a chance.

I have tried all kinds of makeup, Clinque, Almay, everything even Bare Minerals. I have really sensitive skin, so I’ve found that Mary Kay is the only thing doesn’t make my skin break out. I recently found this out, so now I wear mascara, moisturizer, blush, eye shadow. It’s been over a month and I haven’t had any problems yet.

I’m in my 40’s now and I find that wearing makeup has become a daily thing, even on the weekends I put on at least moisturizer and mascara.
