The Perfect Knife

Well, that’s a kind of violent way to start a post, now isn’t it? The perfect knife? Well, we discussed my addiction to the softest sheets in the world. Now we’ll talk about my affinity for really good kitchen knives. Here is my favorite:
Favorite Knife It’s the perfect weight. It fits in my hand. I use it for almost everything. In case any of the five boys are reading this, let me remind them…These knives to NOT go into the dishwasher.

That knife belongs to this set of Henckel knives.

I love these knives. We only get the “two guy” Henckel knives. See the two guys on the block? There are two guys on the knives too. Don’t know what that mean, but I know that means they are better than the one guy knives from Henckel.
Knife Sharpener And this is the magic thing that SuperGuy uses to make sure my knives are razor sharp. Not sure what he does with it exactly, but presto, like magic, the knives are all sharp again after he sits down with the magic knife thingie for a bit.

I’m telling you, don’t mess with me and my knives. And boys, if you’re reading this, I MEAN IT. Do NOT put the knives in the dishwasher!! Sometimes a mother has to repeat herself on the important life lessons…

Do you have any kitchen things you just can’t live without? Are you addicted do you like good kitchen knives?

Easy 1 2 3 Bread

In honor of spending some time last week at my son’s, in his college town, I thought I’d share my Easy 123 Beer Bread recipe. Perfect for a last minute addition to any meal. It makes a moist, kind of crumbly, loaf of bread with a crisp crust. Yum–mee
123 bread ingredients

Okay, here’s the 1-2-3

3 cups of SELF RISING flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 can or bottle of beer

(there was an eclectic choice of beer. I used the Redbridge, “saved” the Corona, I’m thoughtful that way)

mix in bowl

Dump the 3 ingredients into a bowl. Doesn’t it look fun, frothy and foamy?? Mix. It makes a batter that is thicker than cake batter and sticky.

Put in greased loaf pan.

Wait! What is that in the upper right corner of the pic? Just barely visible?? Is that possibly another bottle of “1 ingredient”?? Well, it’s always a good idea to sample the ingredients when you cook, don’t you know? I’m thoughtful that way. And if you happen to have this “1 ingredient” with a slice of lime in it, so much the better…

Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes. Give or take. It’s pretty hard to wreck this recipe.

Now, I know, you’re asking where is the after picture?? Well, I was making dinner for a gaggle passel whole heck of a lot of 20 something males. The bread came out of the oven. I sliced it…and before I could turn around and get my camera, the bread was history. So I had myself another one of those “1 ingredients” with lime.

I’m thinking I should have made 2-4-6 bread — doubled the recipe and made two loaves

The Perfect Spice Rack

Now I know this will come to you guys as a surprise, since I’ve told you about this secret and this one. But I do actually cook real meals. And I have the perfect spice rack. No, really. SuperGuy made it for me. It hangs on the wall in my kicthen. I’m kinda into my herbs and spices if you can tell.ultimate spice rack

BTW, that photo was a sonofagun to get. I think a took a bazillion pictures of it. I know. You’ve heard it before. So much light reflecting off so many shiny labels. Not so great lighting in that part of the kitchen. Sigh.

SuperGuy makes me lots of things. He’s handy that way. But this is one of my favorites. Orderly. Spices all lined up in alphbetical order. Mostly. I have way too much cinnamon. What’s up with that? And see that yellow slip of paper behind the ginger? That’s a left over clue from a treasure hunt for the boys, oh, say five years ago. It makes me smile when I see it. So it stays there. I’m sentimental that way.

And look at the neato details he put into the sides of it. Notice the fluting. Yes, why now that you mention it, it DOES match the woodwork he put in around the doors. Check out the doorframe in the first picture. He’s handy that way.

Really whats not to love about a man who knows what a vacuum is and isn’t afraid to use it…and he makes me things. He’s handy that way.

Dare I ask where your spices reside??
